Lis Watkins is a professional artist and illustrator based in London, specialising in on-site drawing, travel illustration and hand-drawn maps. She is also a member of the international Urban Sketchers community and a regular contributor to the events organised by the Urban Sketchers London group.

In this workshop we will learn how to construct a sketch using areas of colour, line detail and blank space. We will use the spirit of “less is more” and be economical and accurate with marks, making each one count towards creating the final image.

Often when sketching, the view in front of you can be busy and complex and knowing where to start can seem daunting. Starting boldly by putting big shapes with watercolour can help to build a drawing quite quickly.

There is no right or wrong way to draw so the techniques are just offered as potential tools for the urban sketcher to add to their drawing arsenal.
